Coaching the Past Without Becoming a Therapist

Updated: Sep 24

A large pine tree in a forest with its trunk split and leaning to one side after being broken by wind and lightning in a thunderstorm.
Even the strongest trees carry scars from past storms. In coaching, the question isn’t what caused the break—it’s how those marks shape the way we move forward today.

Imagine you’re walking with a client down a forest path. Suddenly, they point to a tree scarred by lightning years ago. Do you climb inside the trunk and analyze the scorch marks (therapy)? Or do you pause with them, acknowledge the scar, and ask: “How does that mark shape the way you walk this path today?” (coaching).

That’s the essential question: how do we as coaches stay in the present and future, while honoring the past without getting lost in it? Walk with me and let's explore it together.⚡🌳
