Coaching Through Stuckness

There is a particular sentence coaches hear often.
I know what I need to do. I just can’t seem to do it.
By the time a client says this, they have usually been trying for quite a while. They have thought about the problem from every angle, talked it through with people they trust, gathered information, made plans, abandoned plans, and perhaps coached themselves halfway to death.
They are not necessarily short on insight. They may not even be short on motivation.
They are simply not moving.
And that distinction matters, because the obvious response to stuckness is to look for movement.
But what if movement isn't the first thing needed?
What if stuckness is where the coaching begins?
